Elementary Minimum Entrance Standards

Kindergarten (4-5 year olds)
  1. Must be able to safely use scissors and zip up their own coat.

  2. Must hold and use a pencil correctly.

  3. Must be able to write their own name, recognize a minimum of fifteen letters of the English alphabet, and count to 10 with 1-to-1 correspondence (i.e. counting out ten objects from a group).

  4. Must be at least five years old by December 31st of the school year.

 

Grade 1 (5-6 year olds)
  1. Must be able to safely use scissors, tie their own shoes, and zip up their own coat.

  2. Must be able to write, name, and sound-out the entire alphabet.

  3. Must be able to read simple three and four letter words. Must write the numbers 0 to 30.

 

Grade 2 (6-7 year olds)
  1. Must fluently read & comprehend "Frog & Toad are Friends".

  2. Must be able to neatly print alphabet (upper & lower case).

  3. Must write a complete sentence.

  4. Must be able to quickly add and subtract 1 & 2 digit problems.

 

Grade 3 (7-8 year olds)
  1. Must fluently read “Madeline” by Ludwig Bemelmans.

  2. Must answer complete questions in complete sentences.

  3. Must add / subtract problems with borrowing & carrying.

  4. Must be able to give 100 addition / subtraction facts in 7 minutes each.

  5. Must correctly read a clock & count money.

 

Grade 4 (8-9 year olds)
  1. Must fluently read “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” by Richard & Florence Atwater.

  2. Must diagram a sentence according to the following: subject, adjective, adverb, preposition, object of the preposition, & verb.

  3. Must be able to write neatly in both cursive and print.

  4. Must master Grade 3 math concepts.

 

Grade 5 (9-10 year olds)
  1. Must fluently read & summarize “Stuart Little” by E.B. White.

  2. Must know and understand the eight parts of speech with simple and complete subjects and predicates.

  3. Must master Grade 4 math concepts.

 

Grade 6 (10-11 year olds)
  1. Must fluently read & summarize “Tuck Everlasting” by Natalie Babbitt.

  2. Must be extremely proficient in cursive

  3. Must label parts of speech: direct and indirect object.

  4. Must master Grade 5 math concepts.

 

Grades 7 & Beyond

These students are tested on academic understanding and mastery of certain concepts, and then placed accordingly. Please call for further details.
